Dr. Shinju Fujihira was born in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, and first came to the United States at the age of twelve. He brings nearly three decades of experience in academic programming, strategic planning, fundraising, communications strategy, and student-centered learning, with a longstanding commitment to advancing cooperation between the United States and Japan. In August 2026, he became the fifth President of Showa Boston Institute. Before his appointment, he served for twenty-two years (2004–2026) as Executive Director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. He received his B.A. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Princeton University. He has taught at Tufts University, the Fletcher School, Harvard Summer School, and the Department of Government at Harvard.

Dr. Fujihira is the recipient of the Harvard Heroes 2024 award, a university-wide staff recognition that "celebrates the accomplishments of Harvard staff whose work supports the mission of Harvard at the highest levels of contribution, impact and excellence." At the Weatherhead Center, he was awarded the National Security Fellowship from the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies (1999–2000) and the Advanced Research Fellowship from the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations (2002–2003). In 2014, he was selected to join Cohort III (2014–2016) of the U.S.-Japan Network for the Future (NFF), an initiative of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.
