Academic Programs

Our academic curriculum is inspired by our mission to help international students, mostly from Japan, develop their English proficiency, cultivate their cross-cultural awareness, and foster their personal growth. Our courses promote active participation and engagement, and also follow an experiential learning model which encourages learning and discoveries through field trips, guest speakers, as well as project-based research assignments. Our out-of-classroom activities empower students to seek new opportunities to engage meaningfully with local people and gain transferable skills that they can take back to Japan.

Showa Boston offers study abroad programs primarily for students at our home campus, Showa Women’s University, in Tokyo, Japan. We offer semester-length programs of skill-based ESL, content-based ESL, and experiential learning to students of International Studies, English Communication, Global Business, and other disciplines. Additionally, we offer various short-term study abroad experiences including a summer session and a junior high school program. Specialized short programs include Early Education, Japanese History and Culture, Pharmacy, and Nutrition, all of which aim to improve the English communication skills and knowledge base of students of these disciplines.

Our experiential courses are designed to let students explore the city of Boston and its environs, and speak with local people. Experiential courses include New England Studies, Boston Project, and Volunteering.

These are the three achievement scales for our semester-long programs:
